The basic debate involving recessions and depressions revolve around how much government assistance should be given to bail out the unemployed workers and bankrupt companies. Look at the auto industry bailout proposals. They were very expensive and very controversial. Why should the taxpayers bail out the auto companies who failed to adjust to economic trends in their industry? Should we bail them out to save jobs, or let them destroy themselves? The bankers were in a similar boat — they engaged in stupid lending practices that got them in trouble. But the failure of major banks in an economy can ignite a recession or depression, which hurts all of us. What to do?
If you search for banking, auto, bailout, — these terms should get you into the types of subjects you need to review.
Hope this helps.
