I’ve been evangelising about a website I’m very impressed with.
It’s called findagoodone.com and apparently local businesses can advertise on it for free.
I’ve used it as a customer and it was an absolute godsend. Someone on Yahoo Answers recommended it to me. I used it to find a joiner and got a great one. I like it because you don’t have to give all your details and you can pick the tradesman you like based on feedback from their customers. The joiner I got said it was very good too and it hadn’t cost him anything.

Networking. First get your friends and family members to help. Then, get them to recruit their friends and family members.
Service. Give good, first class service to your customer. Ask them to spread the word for you.
Gimmick. A one-off gimmick to launch your business or something. It doesn’t have to be huge, just something gimmicky, something that people will remember.
Best of luck!

Have you thought about approaching your local paper or free newspaper and asking if they are interested in doing a piece on either you or your business. You will have to think of an angle – maybe you are employing local people in an unemployment blackspot or perhaps you are a local person made good. Have you been made redundant and this is your fight back. Try and think of a human interest and then “sell” it to your local paper. Otherwise try a leaflet drop in the local area. You could print your own leaflets on the computer and contact your local newsagent to see how much it would cost to have the paper boys/girls to deliver with the local paper.

I have just three words for you ‘WORD OF MOUTH”. Get out and tell everyone about it. Buy a ream of paper at Staples or Office Depot for $5 make a master on your computer, go to a copy shop with the ream and print 500 information sheets on your business, like the hours, name, location, why people should come or use it and maybe a coupon. Then get out and go to every local business in town and give them one.
I wish you would have stated what type of business you had.
If you would like to read my story of start up email me direct and I will reply.
Sincerely,
Val

The cheapest advertising I have found is to start local and this will spread. It is cheap and people will talk. This method applies whether you have a local or an Internet based business.
If you have a web site, start advertising the cheap way – it will soon spread as people talk to each other on the Internet
The method is fully described at

It’s not too late to write a business plan although the advertising should have been covered before the business started. Check with your library for the book, “Marketing without Money” by Nicholas E Bade. You’ll learn alot of tips for free or low cost advertising. Keep in mind your advertising costs are tax deductible so if your business is profitable you will actually SAVE money by spending it.

There are many ways of advertising. The obvious and cheapest being word of mouth!!
But there are other cheap and effective ways to get you out there.
Print of load of leaflets off this don’t cost much. Grab the man who delivers the free papers and other him a fiver to pop one in every house he delivers to. This is what I did wen I had a window cleaning business l wanted to promote.
Believe me, it does work, a lot of people do read there free papers.
Also you could make boards up and have someone parade the street, proberly best if you do that part yr self.
Another good way to advertise, if you have a shop, is to make some co-motion outside to attract peoples attention to yr area.
Iv’e no idea what yr business is, and with more information l could help you better. There are amny ways of advertising, and mostly it depends on the product you are trying to sell to the public.
Without the knowledge of what you are trying to sell it’s hard to advise you further.
gGood Luck!!

I’ve used findagoodone.com too. I have a tiling business and it does bring in a slow steady trickle of work. Best of all it’s free for a year.

If your businnes is local to your area the cheapest way is church magazines ,they normally come out monthly ,i pay £30-50 a year .the local free paper used to cost me £50 a month .putting out flyers will bring in something ,i put out 10,000 once ,waited for the phone to ring ,nothing for months ,then the odd call now and again ,what do you do when flyers come through your door ,(bin most of them ) you have to look at what attracts your eye to something and use that in your ads.

It depends on the type of business.
You could hold seminars
Put up nice colourful posters at the supermarket or community centre … or at social clubs … at the ladies room.
Or make small fliers and distribute them at related outlets, i.e. advertise yoga at meditation centres, or vice verse.
Be creative …
Good luck with your new venture

I work for the Hearst publishing company. Through its partnerships with Google Yahoo and Msn we have been able to develop a product that is affordable and makes sense. This program I have advertised is one where we develop an online business profile for you accessible via Google Yahoo and Msn. And, through your profile and our promotion of it through keywords we will guarantee at least 25 people a month will come to your website toofor 80 dollars a month with one month downpayment! we also have packages for as many as 1000 people. We do this through sponsored links. If you were to google alone you could do the same thing but it would cost you per key word resulting in more money spent. We not only give you the promotion through Google but, Yahoo and Msn as well for nothing additional, all 3 search engines unlimited keywords and one price guaranteed! As far as my location, I live and work in Upstate Ny. Please feel free to contact me on my cell phone, 518-928-7581
Best Wishes,
